Us & the People
Over the past few weeks, we have read many articles dealing with invasive species. Some were negative, some were positive, and some were neutral. In conclusion, we learned there are many different opinions from many different people about non-native organisms. We both agree that although there are some down sides to invasive species, including health problems in the ecosystem and putting other organisms at risk, not all invasive species are bad for the environment. Some invasive species are very helpful to the environment and can create more beneficial biodiversity. As the species become more used to the environment they have moved into, the biodiversity can boost economic productivity and all of the species will have an important role in the economy.
As apart of our original contribution, we had our teacher ask not only our class but also Miss Zachariah's classes whether the other biology students think that invasive species are harmful to the environment or not. Also, at lunch and in our other classes, we asked several other students their thoughts on invasive species.
The results were: 92 students believe that invasive species are harmful to the environment and 36 students believe that invasive species are harmless and/or beneficial.
